Meet Me!  I’m Doug (a/k/a Kirk Douglas (#4264)), Your Sweet, Low-Key Golden Companion

If you’re looking for a mellow, lovable 7-year old Golden Retriever who’s more about couch cuddles than mountain hikes, then I might just be your perfect match.

I am an affectionate, soulful boy with what I am told are, “the cutest short fluffy legs (with the most amazing curls) and a serious talent for napping.” I enjoy the simple things in life: short walks, cozy corners, gentle pets, frozen peanut butter Kongs, and the occasional puzzle toy (I am a smart cookie!). My favorite pastime? Snoozing at your feet while you work or finding the perfect tucked-away spot for a nap.

I’m now about 75lbs, which is good for me, it’s helping ease the arthritis and hip dysplasia I live with. My joint pain is well managed with basic supplements, medication, and a maintenance injection that I only need monthly.  While I generally get around just fine, I may need a boost to get in the car, and a single-story home or one with minimal stairs would be ideal so I can age in comfort.

I adore people and light up on walks when someone stops to say hi. I’m great in the house, fully housetrained, don’t chew things that aren’t mine, and settle beautifully when left alone for a few hours. I’m not crate-trained, but haven’t needed to be!

I prefer human companions over canine ones and would be happiest as the only dog in the home. While I’ve made progress with seeing other dogs on walks (treat training is going well!), I’m not a dog park type of guy. I also haven’t spent much time around kids and would do best in a calm, adult-only home or one with older, dog-savvy children (13+), especially since I can be a bit possessive around food.

My dream home includes:

• No other dogs or small kids
• A calm, cozy environment
• Fewer stairs (I’m not a fan)
• A family who’s home part of the day or can arrange a midday potty break
• Lots of love, pets, and comfy nap spots

I am quirky, endearing, and a total lovebug. From my “fancy pants” curls to the way I lay flat on his back with all four paws in the air, I am nothing if not a goofy sweet boy. I’m not the right fit for an active, high-energy household, but if you’re looking for a sweet, generally low-maintenance Golden with a heart of gold, I would love to be considered!
