This handsome Black Labrador Retriever is Gus (#4292). Gus is 1 1/2- years old and weighs 80 pounds.  Gus loves meeting new people.

Gus is ready and available for adoption!  He’s looking for a person or family that wants a fun loving dog.  Like any young dog, he does have a lot of energy and needs good exercise, but in between the walks and fetch sessions, he is content to hang out with his people and has great house manners.  He’s always up for a belly rub or a snuggle session on the sofa.  Gus will continue to need leash work and learning how to keep all four paws on the ground, but he’s a loving boy who is going to make an awesome companion.

October Update on Gus:

Gus has been in foster care since early October and is settling in nicely. He’s such a sweet boy and he loves everyone. His owner really loved him but had some health issues that prevented his giving him the life he felt Gus deserves. Gus definitely has a joie de vivre! His foster family was a bit worried that he might be a bit much for the resident senior Labs in the home, but from day one, he has been gentle and respectful. Good boy Gus! In fact, he’s got great manners in the house; he’s never had an accident and not once has he chewed something he wasn’t supposed to. Furthermore, in spite of those long legs, he hasn’t tried to counter surf- not that tempting things are left out when he’s not supervised. He’s been left for a maximum of three hours so far, and cameras show that he mostly sleeps when we’re away. He has discovered the couch, and his favorite spot is on the covered couch in the front office where he can watch walkers and cars go by. He sleeps on a dog bed in the master bedroom and sleeps the night through. Don’t be surprised if you get woken up in the morning with a big lick to the face though.

Gus’s favorite activity is playing fetch, and it’s a great way to burn off some of that youthful energy. Not once has he decided he was done before the ball thrower is ready to take a break. We also take two long brisk walks a day, and walking without pulling is Gus’s biggest challenge we’re working on. He’s already improved quite a bit, but he is still getting overexcited when we see new people and/or dogs. He will also pull if he sees a squirrel (and sometimes birds) but today we walked by a herd of deer, and if anything, he was a bit afraid of them. I do imagine he would have pulled if the deer had started to run. The other thing Gus is scared of is large Halloween decorations, particularly the large inflatable ones. He makes me cross the road to keep his distance. Gus has also had a few doggie playdates and done very well. And he absolutely loves water, whether it’s coming out of a hose or coming down the Deschutes.

Stay tuned for updates as we wait to get Gus’s vetting finished up. He’s going to be quite the catch for the active person or family that also wants a complete cuddle bug.
