Gunther #2815
We adopted Gunther/Jake in July of 2018. He was a truly beautiful dog inside and out, he loved every person he every met. So far he was not too good around other dogs but he was working on it and getting better. He was our 4th Golden and without a doubt one of the smartest, he would pick up a new behavior in minutes. He loved life and everything he saw was a new adventure for him. He was perfect in our house from day one. He learned very quickly and was eager to please and liked to try new things.
This past Saturday, Feb. 2nd. We went to the dog park as usual and we got to explore and play ball, he loved to play with his ball and boy was he fast. He always brought it right back so he could go again. Strangely even though it was a bright sunny day there were no other dogs or people that day so we had the place to ourselves. The 3rd time I threw the ball he quickly retrieved it and started back to me. About 5 feet from me he froze, his legs twitched and he hit the ground hard on his side. By the time I got to him he was dead. I don’t know what happened but I will have to live with this vision in my mind forever.
He was going to be a great dog and he had already become my best friend. We all miss him very much and are still reeling from this. He had a rough start in life being rescued from China and spending a year in isolation there. It took a long time for him to get here but he really loved his life here, his toys, his beds, his yard and his family. He didn’t deserve this.

GBR is pleased to introduce Gunther (#2815). This gorgeous boy arrived from China on 3/28. While Gunther was waiting (for a whole year!) in China to come to the US, he got into some fence fights and became known as a very dog reactive dog who couldn’t be around other dogs. So he was kept separate, exercised separately, and did not much training for all that time. He loves to chase the ball and run fast.
While in Beijing during one visit, GBR had a trainer come out and work with Gunther and another dog to see how he did. It was a submissive, young female and Gunther was quite good, very attentive to the trainer (and treats) and after not that long, he was able to be in the fenced area loose with the other dog with no problem. So some work with a trainer, which he’s currently receiving in the Portland area, and some leash work (he’s very exuberant but who can blame him – he had very little attention for a year!), and he’ll have a good chance for a great life. He’s very good with people, loves attention, and is a smart dog who learns quickly. He just needs the opportunity to prove himself!
Gunther did very well on his long trip to the US, was quiet and quite well mannered during all the transit madness, and impressed everyone involved.
