Hello – My name is Bette Davis (#4296), like the movie star. Don’t worry – I’m not some high maintenance Diva Dog. I’m a sweet and mellow leading lady – Golden Retriever Style!

While you should never ask a lady her age, I’m happy to tell you I am 5-years old (ish…). I’m not 100% sure of my birthday. I recently im-migrated from China, and some of my details were, let’s just say, lost in translation!

I love my new life in America. There are so many new experiences for me. I’m living inside (I haven’t had an accident in several weeks). I’m playing with my Golden Retriever foster sister (we share our toys nicely). I’m going for walks on a leash (I never pull too hard). I love going on car rides (I try to get in the car every time we walk by it).

I’ve been told that I’m practically perfect in every way. Looking at my photos I think you will agree!! Just this week, I went to the groomer for the first time – and she said I was the best girl! She said I loved all the attention (duh – I’m a golden!) and wasn’t scared at all by the hair dryer!

Looking at the photos, you’ll see I’m a big girl – curvaceous I would say. My vet says I should lose a few pounds, and I’ve been working on that with my foster family. When she first examined me, I weighed 85 pounds. She says I should aim to get down to 75 pounds. I’ve made some progress, but I still have 5-6 pounds to go. I already feel much better and am much more active after losing the first few pounds.

I also have another challenge that I’ve lived with my whole life. My eyeballs didn’t form properly when I was born. I’m not blind (I don’t run into walls or get lost walking around my house or yard), but it can take a little while for me to get comfortable moving around in a new place. If I didn’t tell you, you might not notice my limitations. Some situations where you could notice are when we are playing fetch or going for a walk in a new place. When we play fetch (I love playing fetch), if you throw the ball too far away, I may lose track of it. Sometimes on walks, if we change directions quickly, I may hesitate and need some love and reassurance from you that the new direction is ok.  I do require eye drops, daily, for the rest of my life to ensure I keep what vision I have.  Fortunately, they are only about $10 a month from an online pharmacy.

I mentioned a foster sister before, but I actually live with three foster siblings – all Golden Retrievers too! I’m right in the middle of them age-wise. I have a brother who is 14, a sister who is 11, and another sister who is 4. I play the most with my younger sister, but I get along with all of them really well. We’re a happy pack – and draw lots of comments on our walks!

I don’t have any experience with children or cats – but I’m so mellow, I can’t imagine they would bother me one bit!
If I were to describe my perfect forever family, it would have humans who would love me (a lot, like constantly – hey, I’m a Golden Retriever), would play with me and take me for walks (but in moderation – I’m a lover, not a marathon runner), and it would be great if there were another pup who I could hang out with and play. Finally, in my previous life, I spent most of my time alone in a cage, and I’m still ok with being alone when it is necessary. However, it would be perfect if I had humans who could be with me most of the time. I look forward to laying at your feet, always ready for a pet or a scratch!

I hope to meet you soon.

Love,
Bette Davis

PS – Don’t get hung up on the name, my foster parents never call me Bette Davis – I’m Betty / Ms B / Betty-Betty / Betty-Boop / Betty-Girl / you get the idea…
