Memorial: Chewbacca "Chewie"

Chewbacca "Chewie" Crossed the Rainbow Bridge on December 6, 2007

Chewbacca
On December 6th we has to say goodbye to our big, brave, loving dog, Chewbacca "Chewie" Johnson. We adopted him from you [Golden Bond Rescue] 9 years ago and he rewarded us with love, humor, and protection. We originally decided to adopt a dog after some heavy lobbying on the part of our younger son who was 8 or 9 at the time. Chewie quickly became a member of the family, sleeping on Ben's bed every night, going to soccer games, hanging out, and patrolling the kitchen for every scrap of food he could beg, borrow or steal.

He was a very healthy dog, strong, active, and playful. Even at 11 except for a little distinguished white on his muzzle. He could have passed for a 5 year old. Sadly, in September he had emergency surgery for what turned out to be hemangioma sarcoma which ruptured his spleen. Despite a grim prognosis he bounced back quickly and we thought we would have many more months with him. Our hopes vanished very suddenly on the evening of the 6th when he became very weak and the doctors at Dove Lewis diagnosed another internal bleeding episode and enlarged heart and liver blood vessels. The cancer had returned and he was at risk for a painful coronary event or shock. So we said our last goodbyes and cried our hearts out.

The house is pretty empty right now and the holiday season will is a little less bright. Never was there a dog more loving or loved than our Chewie.

Adopted October 1998

Chewbacca "Chewie" was adopted in October 1998 when he was two years old. All that is known of his history is that he was found running loose about six weeks before the Johnson family welcomed hin to their home. He is a wonderful dog, sweet and loyal. "Chewie" fits him perfectly . Thank you for our wonderful friend.
