Success Story: Spirit (#398)

Adopted May 2003

SpiritSpirit was warmly welcomed by Kylie (age 13) and Sa-leah (age 10) and their parents Mike and Candace. He was very excited on the road trip to Portland, because he somehow knew of the happy times and adventures awaiting him in Portland. The quiet small town life was fun for a while and he had a great time with the other foster dogs and cats, but it was good to be able to pack his special blanket and go to his forever home. Spirit shares a big two story house filled with an incredible amount of love and caring, with his family, two cats and a collie. His day begins early with a morning run. He helps Mike with various projects around the house and yard while Candace is at work and the girls attend school. Evenings are spent playing with his new friends at a nearby dog-friendly park. Spirit is currently learning house and yard rules, and how important it is to get along with the cats. He has begun classes to learn even more new skills. What a happy ending for one of our special Golden Boys!

Latest Update: October 19, 2003

My family and I adopted Spirit (now known as Kuma) in May of this year. I just wanted to let you know how much we love this dog. Before we adopted him we were use to living with a 10 year old collie, who hasn't broken any doggy rules for the last 5 years. So, Kuma — Mr. High Energy himself — was somewhat of a shock to our system and our lifestyle. The first month was touch and go. He used his mouth on us all the time. He chewed up several leashes, while I was trying to walk him. He thinks the front seat of the car should be his and he chases our cats. There were several moments where I wasn't sure our relationship was going to work out. Five months later, I can't imagine not having him in our house and lives.

I have the following tips for the unprepared or those that have forgotten what life with a young lively dog is like. Gentle leaders really work. Seat belts for the dog are a good thing. Always have a treat handy to retreive your favorite item from your dogs mouth. Cats can jump over child safety gates. Long walks and trips to the park really do make a difference, as does obedience training and lots of pets and belly rubs.

Adopting a rescue dog has been a very rewarding experience for our family and Golden Bond does a wonderful job. Although it wasn't love at first sight for us, it is forever love now. I check your web site at least once a week. I love reading about the dogs and seeing them get new families. Besides, you never know when there might be another dog out there waiting to fit into our home. Thank you for the great work that Golden Bond does!
