Memorial: Maggie (#379)

Maggie Crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Saturday, September 11, 2004

MaggieMaggie only called our house home for a short time, but she'll be a member of our family forever. She was a wonderful dog, I couldn't have asked for a better first pet. Although the intake papers said she was 8, nobody believed us when we told them. For the first month, she followed us around the house like our shadow, seeking (and receiving) constant attention. Gradually she knew this was home and developed her favorite spots to lie down. She was always ready to go, she loved to go on great long walks, cross country skiing, snow shoeing and bike rides — she always led (or pulled!) the way. Dozens of strangers commented on how beautiful she was; what a great pup they would say and ask where they could get one just like her (of course I told them Golden Bond!). I even had a Portland police car pull over — both officers inside couldn't stop talking about what a gorgeous and well behaved dog she was. I was so proud. And now we are saddened. We'll miss her leaning, her kisses, the sound of her toe nails on the floor, her rushing to door when she heard the keys rattle, staying up with her on the 4th of July. The list goes on and for now the squirrels in our neighborhood are safe. We are grateful for the time we did have, playing ball and wagging her tail until the last day and dying in our arms and those of her foster mom on her last day.
