Success Story: Rita (#1621) Now Ravenna

Adopted Oct. 15, 2007

How did we get so lucky to have this darling girl in our lives? Ravenna (formerly Rita) came to us as a foster dog in late September. We picked her up at her home on the coast, south of Lincoln City. She was 4 ˝ years old and had already birthed two litters. Her owner had three dogs, Ravenna, her mother, and Ravenna’s daughter. Three dogs were too much for the household. We were told Ravenna was aggressive toward other dogs and a constant barker, both of which bothered the owner. Ravenna was a little thin when she came to us and the vet recommended increasing her daily food amount.

Leaving her dog family and her owner has been hard for Ravenna. She is now the only dog and does not have the company of her mother and daughter. Ravenna needs a lot of attention and still more than three months later, sticks to us closely wanting interaction At first, she had a hard time sleeping through the night often wandering around the house several times. Now she is settling in for the night much easier.& Perhaps because she spends half of it sleeping on our bed!

She is a squirrel chaser and a fast runner. We take her to local parks where she can run off leash. She loves running and never seems to tire.  Ravenna reacts to animals on television, watching the screen intently and often jumping up and barking.  Ravenna monitors the activities on the sidewalk in front of our house.  She is prone to bark wildly at dogs that pass by and we have had success in teaching Ravenna to calm herself at these moments.  She gets along with our cat and has only one nose scratch so far.

Ravenna is a joy to have. She is extremely sweet and well behaved. She does well at a local doggie daycare and she is socializing more with other dogs at the dog parks and in our neighborhood. She has snapped a few times at other dogs, so we have learned to watch her behavior as she interacts with new dogs. When a pit bull picked a fight with her at our neighborhood park, Ravenna held her own and the pit bull backed off. (Obviously not a killer pit bull, thank goodness!)

She is so loving and gentle.  She just asks for a few pets and maybe a snack or two. One night she came into the living room with a stick of butter! It had been on the kitchen counter obviously too close to the edge!  We are now more careful with our food storage. She makes us smile and we hope that she is happy with us.
