It was November 1st, 2006 when the phone rang. It was a call from Golden Bond Rescue. There was urgency to find someone to foster two Golden Retrievers.
You may remember a brief story about Goldendoodles on the news last November. A breeder out in Clatskanie had called Oregon Humane Society to ask them to come get all the dogs because she could no longer care for them. Most of the dogs and puppies were goldendoodles and labradoodles. There were two Goldens who were used to breed the Goldendoodles, Sam, 3 years old and Novelty barely 2 years. Golden Bond Rescue made a fast dash to Clatskanie to pick up the two dogs. It became evident very early on that these two dogs simply could not be separated. Never having had much interaction with people and virtually no socialization, they were extremely attached to each other. Separating them for only a short time…even within sight of each other…produced serious whining.
The two were immediately taken to the vet and given much-needed baths, a thorough examination and a clean bill of health…and most importantly, spay and neuter, which put both of them on the market looking for another line of work.
On November 3rd, I went to pick them up from the vet and brought them home. They were very reserved, quiet and timid. It was evident that they had never lived in a house before…they came from living in a barn with about 25 other dogs to living in a home with 2 overly attentive people types…who seemed to have an aversion to dogs relieving themselves in the family room. Go figure!
Over the next few weeks, Sam figured out that you went outdoors to take care of business and Novelty finally started eating after about 3 days…she was the more shell-shocked of the two. Sam had and was treated for an ear infection…all is well now. Novelty, we discovered suffered from entropion, which required eye surgery. Her lower eyelids turned inwards causing a persistent eye infection. Doing extremely well and looking very beautiful…you can't even tell she had work done. Both have figured out what a leash is and how to go on a walk. Forget the part about timid and quiet…they're very lively, playful and full of energy.
Novelty changed her name to Brandy. They will stay together, as they should. On December 30, 2006, we adopted the two of them. Life with Sam and Brandy is so entertaining. They have finally learned to be house dogs. They act like normal Goldens…loving, playful. We still see a little neurotic tendency in Brandy, but overall, she is thriving. Sam is still the alpha dog and sometimes gets Brandy in trouble, because she'll do whatever he does which is not always proper…like playing hide and seek by finding a loose board in the fence and going to visit the dog next door! The best part is watching them play together..tugging at a toy and chasing each other around the yard.
Thank you, Golden Bond, for calling on us when you did. Sam and Brandy (aka Novelty) are now part of our family. This is their forever home.
