Success Story: Taffy (#1078)

Adopted October 7, 2004

Dear Golden Bond,

TaffyI am so happy in my forever home! You know, I'm trying to forget about my first year of life, being outside all the time, not learning about puppy things, and not knowing how nice people can be. Barbara and Bruce took such good care of me in their foster home that I started to come out of my shell a little bit, but I was still really scared of noises and people. Then Blaine and Mary and their Golden Wannabe, Misha, came to visit. I thought Misha was OK, but I didn't want anything to do with Blaine and Mary, even when they tried to give me treats! However, reluctantly, I left Barbara and Bruce's house and went with Misha into this big van and drove all the way to Portland. (Actually, we stopped in Newport for the night, but that's another story!)

I was so "relieved" when Misha taught me right away to use the doggie door. Whew! Misha has been teaching me lots of things; she's a great stepmom, even though she's 12 years old!

The world is still a pretty scarey place. Toast popping up makes scarey noises! I never knew there were so many sounds in a house to get used to, but I'm getting less afraid every day. The first night, they tried to get me to play with a squeaky toy — BIG mistake. I was really afraid, and ran to hide with my tail plastered up under my belly. I did that a lot the first few days.

Mary and Blaine have decided that, even though I'm a year old, I never got a chance to really be a puppy, so they and Misha are teaching me how to be a puppy. It's fun! I never knew about chasing tennis balls, watching squirrels intently, learning to shake hands and walk on a leash. I never knew I could wag my tail so hard when I was having fun. But I'm learning all those things.

It's still really hard for me to meet new people. And I still don't like cars, trucks, and school buses going close by when I go for my morning walk. But with Mary, Blaine, and Misha guiding me and loving me, I'm making great progress. I'm really playful, I have that funny Golden "smile" and my tail gets tired from wagging with happiness.

Thanks, Barbara and Bruce and Golden Bond for giving me a chance to be a happy and healthy pup.

Love,
Taffy (#1078)
