For the Love of Goldens
Charlie Crossed the Rainbow Bridge on December 26, 2004, 7:31am
Charlie (#1032) "Sweet Charlie" as he was known came to us in April 2004. He was found in Columbia City by a nice lady who called Golden Bond, who realized she couldn't care for Charlie. But after many trips to the vet, where he became a favorite patient, being given lots of love and attention, much experimenting with his medicines and feeding regimen provided some stability to his condition and he was able to lead a nearly normal life. He was fed his special diet four or five times a day, which required "burping" and walking him after each feeding.
Charlie was gentle, mellow and well mannered, enjoying all of his sisters and brothers in his foster homes, generally ignored cats, always came when called (especially at meal time). He was extremely social, always ready to make new friends or visit old ones. He loved to ride in the car, sitting in the back seat, far too dignified to stick his head out the window. He always wanted to be near his people, even if it meant being constantly underfoot. No matter where he was, we loved him and learned to step over him.
Charlie was all about boundless love. His favorite activity was walking around the neighborhood. He was always ready to go and never had to be on a leash. He would pause at every house where one of his friends lived (which was almost every house), waiting and looking around for someone to talk to him or pet him or give him a treat. Even neighbors who weren't dog people enjoyed his visits. Cats learned that Charlie was no threat and even the least friendly dogs were pleasant with him.
Just as he had found his forever family and was about to be adopted in late November, he was diagnosed with lymphoma. He slowly lost ground until Christmas Eve, when his condition just plummeted. He couldn't keep food down, stopped eating, and could barely walk. And so it was his time to cross the rainbow bridge.
Charlie was shared between two families while he was with Golden Bond. We all loved him very much. We all miss "Sweet Charlie" and it is still difficult to think about him without getting tears in our eyes and a lump in our throat. He enriched our lives with his gentle nature and we will remember him always.
